CLASSES

Thank you for your interest in learning with Owl Eyes! Below you will see all of the classes that I currently offer with the suggested times for a full class. I will gear the class toward the age and experience of the group. If you would like to learn any of these skills, please contact me to schedule a private class or contact your local library, museum, or nature center and tell them about Owl Eyes Wilderness Survival.

FIRE

BUILDING FIRES IN THE RAIN

Hypothermic conditions, including rain, make starting fires an even harder task! Learn to build, start, and maintain fires in wet conditions. 2 hours.

HAND DRILL BASICS

This class will introduce you to a simple friction fire method called hand drill. A hand drill includes only a thin hearth board, and a long spindle from an herbaceous plant which is spun by rubbing your hands back and forth. 1 ½ hours.

BOW DRILL BASICS

The bow drill is made up of a spindle, hearth board, hand hold, and a fire bow. You will be shown the technique of starting a bow drill fire and have hands on practice with this tool. This ancient survival skill is a must-know for any outdoors enthusiast. 2 hours.

FIRE FROM FLINT AND STEEL

This class will teach you the methods of starting a flint and steel fire, making your own char cloth tinder, and building a successful fire! 1 ½ hours.

FIRE BUILDING

Come learn to safely build various types of wilderness fire structures and start them with modern survival tools! 3 hours.

FORAGE & FIRE

Combining a wild plant walk and a fire building sampler class. We will spend the first half of the class learning about seasonal wild plants. The second half will be spent learning and trying different fire starting techniques. 3 hours.

FIRE FROM THE LANDSCAPE

Finding yourself lost in the woods with no way to start a fire can mean the difference between life and death. Learning how to create fire from the landscape around you is a crucial survival skill! Equipped with just a knife, we will make a bow drill set and start a fire! 5 hours.

ADVANCED FIRE CHALLENGE

This class is for students who are proficient in fire making, have taken a fire class of mine in the past, or who feel they are a fire starting master! Your skills will be pushed hard by rain, wind, and time! Every student's fire building ability will be tested under pressure in a severe downpour, even if we have to create rain ;). 3 hours.

CRAFTING

SPOON CARVING

Never use a plastic spoon again! This is a fun class in which you will learn to carve a spoon using simple, swedish tools! Knife safety is a priority and you will learn effective ways to safely carve wood. 2 ½ hours.

FORK CARVING

Always have reusable utensils with you to save plastic when eating out! This is a fun class in which you will learn to carve a fork using every-day tools! Knife safety is a priority and you will learn effective ways to safely carve wood. 2 ½ hours.
 

BEAR CARVING

Carving animals is an intermediate-advanced carving project that is fun! This class will teach you how to carve a little bear out of a square shaped piece of wood. A beautiful gift! Open to mature students who have already taken my knife safety class. 3 hours.

BURN-OUT BOWLS

Using coals from a fire, a bowl can be made by controlling how a piece of wood burns. Learn to make a personable eating bowl from sustainably sourced wood using just a fire and a knife! 3 ½ hours.

BUCKSKIN NECK POUCHES

Learn sewing techniques and make a cool neck pouch out of buckskin to carry a small survival kit with you on your next woods adventure! 3 hours.

BUCKSKIN CAT TOYS

Cats love buckskin in any shape or size. Let’s sew up some cool sustainable, non-toxic cat toys for your cute cat to play with. 3 hours.

SHELTER

MIXED SKILLS

DEBRIS SHELTER BUILDING

Regulating your core body temperature is a higher priority than hydrating and eating food! Using sticks and what we find on the forest floor we will build a personal shelter called a debris shelter. This shelter requires no tools or rope to build. It also keeps you dry and warm without the use of a fire! 3 hours.

SNOW SHELTERS

I have lived in a snow shelter for 10 days straight and it was extremely cozy! Learn how to build a shelter using mostly snow and materials that nature provides. This shelter will keep you warm despite frigid, windy conditions outside. Snow dependant. 5 hour
 

BACKPACKING SHELTERS

Learn to protect yourself from the elements using common backpacking equipment. Keeping your food safe from animals is a must-know as well! 2 hours.

FOOD

SEASONAL FORAGING

What is there to eat in the woods? Every season and landscape offers unique and nutritious plants to eat and use as medicine! Let’s go on a walk and learn about the most local, organic, and free plants in our area! 2 hours.

FROM TREE TO TABLE

There are wild edible plants almost everywhere you look throughout the year (even in winter). Let’s go for a walk and find some wild plants to eat to bring back to the kitchen for a wild meal! 5 hours.

ACORN PROCESSING

After processing, acorns (the nuts of an oak tree) can be used to make delicious dishes that are also extremely nutritious. Come learn how to gather, preserve, process, and cook with this awesome wild food! My personal favorite wild edible plant. 2 ½ hours

HUNTING WITH THE RABBIT STICK

Obtaining meat in any survival situation will provide you with protein and fat to keep you going! Using materials from the landscape, we will make a hunting tool that can be accurately thrown with devastating force. 2 hours.

PRIMITIVE TRAPS

Traps are known to be more calorie efficient than hunting because they keep working when you are resting. This class will teach you how to find animal trails, make a few traps from the landscape, and set them up! 3 hours.
